(Bewildered, ANTHONY leaves. Music begins under, very agitated. TODD stands motionless, in shock. As the JUDGE hurries off down the street, MRS. LOVETT, with a new bottle of gin in her hand, sees him. She glances after him, then goes into the back parlor where TOBIAS is now asleep. She looks at him, puts down the bottle and hurries out and up the stairs to TODD) MRS. LOVETT ： All this running and shouting. What is it now, dear? TODD ： I had him-- and then... MRS. LOVETT ： The sailor busted in. I saw them both running down the street and I said to myself: "The fat's in the fire, for sure!" TODD ： (Interrupting, sings) I had him! His throat was bare Beneath my hand-- ! MRS. LOVETT ： (Alarmed, pacifying): There, there, dear. Don't fret. TODD ： No, I had him! His throat was there, And he'll never come again! MRS. LOVETT ： Easy now. Hush, love, hush. I keep telling you ? TODD ： (Violently) When? MRS. LOVETT ： What's your rush? TODD ： Why did I wait? You told me to wait! Now he'll never come again! (Music becomes ferocious. TODD's insanity, always close to the surface, explodes finally) There's a hole in the world Like a great black pit And it's filled with people Who are filled with shit And the vermin of the world Inhabit it-- But not for long! They all deserve to die! Tell you why, Mrs. Lovett, Tell you why: Because in all of the whole human race, Mrs. Lovett, There are two kinds of men and only two. There's the one staying put In his proper place And the one with his foot In the other one's face-- Look at me, Mrs. Lovett, Look at you! No, we all deserve to die! Tell you why, Mrs. Lovett, Tell you why: Because the lives of the wicked should be-- (Slashes at the air) Made brief. For the rest of us, death Will be a relief-- We all deserve to die! (Keening) And I'll never see Johanna, No, I'll never hug my girl to me-- Finished! (Turns on the audience) All right! You, sir, How about a shave? (Slashes twice) Come and visit Your good friend Sweeney--! You, sir, too, sir? Welcome to the grave! I will have vengeance, I will have salvation! Who, sir? You, sir? No one's in the chair-- Come on, come on, Sweeney's waiting! I want you bleeders! You, sir? anybody! Gentlemen, now don't be shy! Not one man, no, Nor ten men, Nor a hundred Can assuage me-- I will have you! (To MRS. LOVETT) And I will get him back Even as he gloats. In the meantime I'll practice On less honorable throats. (Keening again) And my Lucy lies in ashes And I'll never see my girl again, But the work waits, I'm alive at last (Exalted) And I'm full of joy!	（うろたえて、アンソニーは立ち去る。 ひどく騒々（ざわざわ）とした伴奏が始まる。 トッドはショックで身動きもせずに立っている。 判事が急いで通りに降りた時、新しいジンの壜を手にしたミセス・ラヴェットが彼を見かける。 彼女は彼の背後を一瞥すると、今やうとうとしているトビーのいる座敷へ戻る。 彼女は彼を見て壜を置く。そして急いで外へ出てトッドのところへと階段を上る） 〔ミセス・ラヴェット〕 走るは叫ぶは、これは全く。 今度は何なの、あなた？ 〔トッド〕 俺は奴を手掛けた―――それで、そうしたら…。 〔ミセス・ラヴェット〕 船乗りが飛び込んできたのね。 二人とも通りに駆け降りて行ったのを見たわ。私、「一大事に違いないわ、きっと！」って思ったの。 〔トッド〕 （遮って歌う） 俺は奴に手をかけた！ 奴の喉首が剥き出しで、 俺の手の内にあったんだ―――！ 〔ミセス・ラヴェット〕 （危険を感じ、なだめながら） ねえ、ねえ、いらいらしないで、あなた。 〔トッド〕 無理だ。俺は奴に手をかけた！ 奴の喉首がそこにあった！ それが、もう奴は二度とやってこない！ 〔ミセス・ラヴェット〕 落ち着いて、ほら。 よしよし、良い子。 ずっと言ってるでしょう、私―――。 〔トッド〕 （荒々しく） いつやれるんだ？ 〔ミセス・ラヴェット〕 何を激高してるの？ 〔トッド〕 俺はなぜ待った？ お前さんが俺に待てと言ったんだ！ これでもう奴はやって来ない！ （音楽が荒れ狂うようになり、トッドのいつも表に出かかっていた狂気がとうとう爆発する） この世には穴がある。 大きな洞穴のような。 そしてそれは肥にまみれた輩で満ちている。 その中にはこの世の害虫が巣食っている―――。 だが、長いことは無い！ 奴らは皆、死に値する！ 何故だか言ってやろう、ミセス・ラヴェット。 何故だか言ってやる。 なぜなら、全人類において人間には、ミセス・ラヴェット、２つの人種があるからだ。ただ２つしかないのさ。 一つは約束された立場に安住するもの。 そしてそいつらは、もう一方の人種の顔を足蹴にしている。 俺を見ろ、ミセス・ラヴェット、自分を見てみろ！ 俺達は皆、死に値する！ 何故だか言ってやろう、ミセス・ラヴェット。 何故だか言ってやる。 なぜなら邪悪な者達の生涯は――― （空を切り裂く） あっけないものに決まっているからだ。 俺達を休息させる死は救済になるだろう―――。 俺達は皆、死に値する！ （膝をつく） もうジョアンナに会うことは無いだろう。 ああ、もう自分の娘を抱きしめることは無いだろう―――もう終わりだ！ （観客に向く） 結構！あなた、そこの方、 髭剃りはいかがです？ （２回切り裂く） いらっしゃいませ、どうぞおいでを。 あなたの良き友スウィーニーのところへ―――！ あなたも、そこの方も―――。 墓場へようこそ！ 俺が為すのは復讐。 俺が為すのは救済だ！ どなたです？あなたは？そこの方。 椅子は空いてございます―――。 さあ、さあ。 スウィーニーが待っている！ 俺はお前達を、血を流す人間を求めている！ あなたは？そこの方。どなたでも！ 皆さん、さあ、臆さずに！ 一人では、いや、十人でも、百人でも、俺の欲望は収まらない―――。 俺はお前達を迎え、手掛けよう！ （ミセス・ラヴェットに向かって） 奴がニヤついていた時と同じように、奴を再び手に収めてやる。 それまでの間は、奴の首を獲るほどの手柄にはならないが、他の人間の喉首で練習しよう。 （再び膝をつく） 俺のルーシーは遺灰の中に眠り、 そしてもう俺の娘に会うことは無いだろう。 しかし、仕事が待っている。 とうとう俺は人生を得た。 （興奮して） そして歓喜に満たされている！	※have「�@（顧客などを）迎える�A手中に収める」 ※The fat's in the fire. 「一大事になる・取り返しがつかない」 ミセス・ラヴェットの運命の暗示でもある。 * 判事と世の中の人間に対する復讐をしてやる、殺すことで世の中の人間と自分を救済してやる、ということ。
