（レイエがピアノのところから新しい曲の練習を監督している。 出席者はクリスティーヌ、カルロッタ、ジリー、そしてコーラス。） 〔コーラス〕 剣を収めよ！さまよえる騎士！ お前の虚飾の空言がお前の最後の決闘を招いた―――。 誇りのためにお前は高い代償を払った！ 〔クリスティーヌ〕 絹のベッドと寝藁を敷き詰めた納屋―――。 彼はどちらも戦場にしてきた。 〔ピアンジ〕 （間違って） ドン・ファンと一戦交えたる者達は…。 〔レイエ〕 （彼を止める） 駄目、駄目、駄目！ コーラス―――休んでいなさい。 ドン･ファン、シニョール・ピアンジ―――。 この箇所はこうです。 （彼は実演して見せる。） "ドン･ファンと一戦交えたる者達は…。" よろしいですか？ 〔ピアンジ〕 （また間違って） ドン･ファンと一戦交えたる者達は…。 〔レイエ〕 いやいや、近いですが―――でも違います。 "たる者達はタン、タン、タン…。" 〔ピアンジ〕 （また間違って） "ドン･ファンと一戦交えたる者達は…。" 〔カルロッタ〕 （他の人々に） 彼のやり方の方が良いわ。 少なくとも音楽らしく聞こえるようにしていますもの！ 〔ジリー〕 （カルロッタに） シニョーラ―――。 作曲家の前でもそんな風におっしゃれますか？ 〔カルロッタ〕 （その注意にある含みを聞くことなく） 作曲家はここにはいないわ。 それにもしいたとしても、私は…。 〔ジリー〕 （遮って口を出す。不吉な様子で） それは確かですか、シニョーラ…？ 〔レイエ〕 それではもう一度―――７の後に。 （彼は注意を与えて数え始める。） ５、６、７…。 〔ピアンジ〕 （また間違う） "ドン･ファンと一戦交えたる者達は…。" （徐々に一同は、話をしたり一斉にに曲の箇所を練習したりしだす。） 〔カルロッタ〕 ああ、もうやってられないわ！我々がどんな調子で歌おうとどうということはないでしょう？ 〔ジリー〕 我慢なさって下さい、シニョーラ。 〔カルロッタ〕 正しかろうが間違おうが誰も分からないわよ。 正しかろうが間違おうが誰も気にしないわ。 〔カルロッタ〕 （ふざけて） "ドン･ファンと一戦交えたる者達は！" 〔ピアンジ〕 （もう一度やってみる） たる者達はタン…タン…。 （クリスティーヌに） 正しいかな？ 〔クリスティーヌ〕 （ピアンジに） ちょっと違いますわね、シニョ−ル。 たる者達はタン…タン…。 〔レイエ〕 （秩序を立て直そうと） ご婦人方、シニョール・ピアンジ、お願いですから…。 （レイエはピアノの鍵盤をガンガン鳴らすとピアノを離れ、そして合図を送って注意を引こうとする。 大混乱の真っ只中に、ピアノが突然ひとりでに音楽を弾き始める。それは力強くリズミカルに演奏する。 全員沈黙し、固まる。やがて突然機械仕掛けのように正確に歌いだす。 皆が歌い続ける側ら、クリスティーヌは集団から離れる。） 〔クリスティーヌ以外の全員〕 哀れな若い乙女！ お菓子をつまみ食いする興奮を味わったために代価を払うことになる―――。 死装束にくるまれて！ （アンサンブルが背景になり、クリスティーヌが一人孤立して歌う） 〔クリスティーヌ〕 眠りの中で彼は私に歌いかけ。 夢の中に彼は現れる…。 私に呼びかけ、名を囁くその声…。 （場面の変化が始まる。 陶酔したようにクリスティーヌはゆっくりと舞台奥へ移動する。 我々は遠くの鐘の音を耳にする。） 小さなロッテは色んなことを考え、また何も考えていませんでした… 彼女のパパは彼女に約束しました。 音楽の天使を彼女に送ってあげると…。 彼女のパパは彼女に約束しました…。 彼女のパパは彼女に約束しました…。 |
